‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ crosses $250 million globally

The early figures suggest “The Force Awakens” is on course to exceed the record domestic opening of “Jurassic World, ” which debuted with $208.8 million in June.

The seventh instalment of the Star Wars cinematic series is projected to record a US$250 million global four-day opening weekend, with $220 million coming from the American and Canadian markets.

That beats the former record holder “Jurassic World” by almost $30 million, which by the way, is more money than “Sisters” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks” brought in all weekend.

To be fair, “Deathly Hallows: Part 2” began its preview showings at Midnight while “Force Awakens” kicked off its US debut at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday night.

To put the huge weekend by “Awakens” in perspective, it made more than the opening weekends of “The Hobbit” trilogy (the big December release of the last three years) combined.

Critics applauded Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which features newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac alongside original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk produced the film with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.
