The Force is definitely strong with Disney’s new Star Wars movie.

$120.5 million – How much the film brought in on its opening day in the USA on Friday, roughly $30 million more than the previous opening-day record.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already smashed several film industry records and won praise from critics and moviegoers. Whatever the case, $238 million is well above the previous U.S. record-holder, Jurassic World, which made $208.8 million during its opening.

Other local records topped by The Force Awakens include largest opening day, largest four-day opening, largest seven-day opening, and the largest Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday daily total for any picture.

“The Force Awakens” opened this weekend in virtually every major market except Greece, India and China, where it will debut on January 9.

$4 billion – The price Disney paid for the franchise’s production company, Lucasfilm, in 2012.

Roughly 58% of the “Force Awakens” audience was male while 63% of the audience was over the age of 25, according to data shared by the studio.

Meanwhile, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” is a distant new entry in the North American chart at number two with United States dollars 14.4 million, while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s “Sisters” comedy took the third spot with USD 13.4 million. Audiences awarded an “A” grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore.

Analysts say the space saga could become the biggest-selling movie of all time, even if it does fail to top Jurassic World’s global opening figures. In comparison, the final Harry Potter film grossed AU$29.3 million in its first week alone, but the new “Star Wars” is predicted to generate AU$35 to AU$40 million.
