Star Wars: The Force Awakens destroys box office records on opening weekend
The seventh Star Wars movie is expected to sell more than $220-million of tickets in the USA and Canadian theatres by the end of Sunday, beating the record $208.8-million for Jurassic World in June, Walt Disney Co said on Saturday.

It also shattered numerous records around the world this weekend.
Previous to this the film had already broke the Thursday preview record with $57 million, and the biggest single-day box office record on Friday with $120 million.
With its Death Star-sized box office Friday in the USA, the Disney film has now in just one day eclipsed the biggest “Star Wars” opening weekend, the biggest December opening weekend, and the biggest opening weekend for director J.J. Abrams.
Overall, The Force Awakens has grossed some US$130 million dollars worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
“The Force Awakens” is only the third movie in history to open at over $200 million, besides its immediate rival “Jurassic World” and “The Avengers”. That figure still lags slightly behind the best ever worldwide opening – also held by Jurassic World at $524.9 million – but there’s still time for the final confirmed numbers to push Star Wars over the top. While “The Force Awakens” drew enormous pre-sales, the film was kept under lockdown from the press and critics until mere days before it was released to the public. Second biggest opening weekend in France, Belgium, Israel, Chile.
Strong reviews for the film, which is set 30 years after “Return of the Jedi”, have added to the fervour for “The Force Awakens”.
In Canada, The Avengers now holds second spot for biggest debut weekend at $15.6 million.
Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac star as new key players in the space opera, with Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprising their iconic roles.
There were questions about the probability of a record breaking weekend for the long dormant franchise with this being the first film in the 38-year franchise to not open in the summer, where grosses are much higher.
