‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ earned $517 million worldwide on its opening
After some detractors were predicting that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ lack of Chinese box office takings was going to hurt its debut and disallow it from taking the dinosaur’s crown, this news only goes to show just how massive the new episode really is. And The Force Awakens passed the total without any help from China, where the film doesn’t open until 9 January. However, some Star Wars fans were anxious when they almost saw the end of the film before viewing it, due to a malfunctioning projector. During that time, the movie is said to make a gross profit of $11 million at the box office, and launching a franchise that Lucas would eventually sell to Disney for over $4 billion.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has broken box office records and has surpassed “Jurassic World” for the biggest worldwide debut. Jurassic World’s record was $208.8 million. It pulled in 120.5 million through Friday, its first full day in domestic theaters, the highest single-day ticket sales ever.
Actor Harrison Ford, 73, is believed to struck an extraordinary pay deal for the movie which may see him earn 56 times as much as the film’s young leads, according to the Daily Mail, which cited “a Disney source”.
Disney’s 2015 hit films included Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant-Man”, while Pixar animation “Inside Out” and live action fairytale “Cinderella” too minted money at the box office.
The story of “The Force Awakens” takes place 30 years in the future (after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi), “after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises”.
Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill reprise their roles as Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker alongside newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.
It is also the first movie to cross $100 million in one day in North America. It earned only $14 million.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 previously held both records at $43.5m for an opening night and $91m for a first day.
