Star Wars: The Force Awakens enjoys biggest opening of all time

Box office forecasters say weekend ticket sales for the film may beat the record set in June by dinosaur movie Jurassic World with $US208.8 million ($281 million). Thousands gathered for a friendly lightsaber battle in downtown Los Angeles last Friday and moviegoers in cities such as Berlin and Paris arrived at screenings wearing Stormtrooper costumes, Jedi robes and Darth Vader masks.

But FOX 5 News Morning anchor Steve Chenevey, who also saw the movie, recommended watching previous “Star Wars” films before seeing this one to avoid getting lost. The highly anticipated movie shatters box office records in its first weekend, including the opening weekend ticket sales of around $238 million from theaters in North America, AceShowbiz reports.

Midnight screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Thursday morning accounted for £2.4m of ticket sales. The seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise opened officially in 4,134 theaters on Friday.

Some $100 million in advance tickets were sold for the movie’s Thursday night debut.

Forty-seven per cent of the opening day’s USA domestic ticket sales came from 3D tickets, Disney said.

According to initial estimates, “The Force Awakens” far surpassed that number raking in an astounding $120.5 million United States dollars.

The movie had opened in 44 overseas markets before its USA debut, breaking records in numerous countries including the U.K., Ireland, and Germany.

Disney, the studio behind the newest installment in the Star Wars series, is set to release four more Star Wars films. The movie is opening six years after Disney paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm.

“They tailored the campaign to every geography around the world, and did it in a way that still preserved some of the mystery of the film while not leaving a single stone unturned”. The current record holder is “Avatar”, which generated $2.8 billion worldwide after its December 2009 release.

“The Force Awakens”, directed by J.J. Abrams, stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in the key roles as Rey and Finn along with original “Star Wars” stars Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher as General Leia.

Audiences awarded it an “A” rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore, Disney said.
