‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ grosses $120.5M to start
If that’s not insane enough, get this: no December release has ever made $100 million dollars in its opening weekend, let alone in one day.

That number blasted the record for the biggest pre-opening in box office history held by “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which made $43.5 million on its opening night in 2011.
3-D screening accounted for 47% of the night’s grosses on Thursday. But we just don’t know how many repeat viewers and part-time Star Wars fans are going to show up on Sunday.
Because “The Force Awakens” is entering uncharted box office territory, typical moviegoing patterns make it hard to forecast where the film’s opening weekend tally may wind up.
With $100 million in the bank, the next question is whether The Force Awakens can be the biggest movie opening weekend of all time, passing Jurassic World last June at $208.8 million.
While “Star Wars” helped create the summer blockbuster, “The Force Awakens” is debuting in the holiday season of December, where the previous top opening was the $84.6 million debut of 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. “The Force Awakens“, which opens in 4,134 theaters, is expected to break more box office records throughout the month. Sequels and spinoffs are already in development for years to come, not to mention an entire corner of Disneyland devoted to the franchise.
The film now holds a near flawless 95% score on review site, RottenTomatoes.com, and has many fans calling it the best film in the series since 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”.
But so far, “The Force Awakens” is attracting the interest of seemingly everyone. That would make it the second-highest grossing picture of all time, trailing only 2009’s “Avatar”, which took in $2.8 billion worldwide.
