Following such a hugely successful first night, industry experts have said Star Wars: The Force Awakens could become the biggest selling movie of all time. This by far exceeds the existing $91 million United States dollars first day record set by ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.’ Additionally, it is also the first Star Wars movie to surpass $100 million USD in a single day! Add that to its Friday numbers, and The Force Awakens earned the highest single-day opening of any movie ever with $120.5 million. Hollis has repeatedly reminded that “there are literally millions of tickets available”. Worldwide, The Force Awakens is still second to Jurassic World’s $524.9 million, but the dinosaur action flick had the advantage of opening day-and-date in China.
In Britain, Germany, Australia, Russia and many other countries, it scored the biggest opening weekend as well.
The new “Star Wars” film is the first installment in a decade of the series, which was created by George Lucas in 1977.
Globally, The Force Awakens has taken an estimated $US517 million ($A720 million), according to boxofficemojo.
3-D and Imax screenings are helping to propel the record gross. Its ability to profitably exploit “Star Wars” across all its divisions was the justification for Disney’s $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm LLC in 2012.
More importantly, the film sets the scene for more sequels to come, not to mention multimedia spinoffs and merchandising.
The film has made $528 million around the world since opening overseas on Wednesday.
As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record – Avatar (US$2.78 billion) and Titanic (US$2.18).

Speaking of his approach to The Force Awakens, he: “The fundamental thing was what do we want people to feel”.
