“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” reaped a record-breaking US$57 million in USA and Canadian ticket sales on its opening night, propelled by critical praise and the fervour of fans eager to see the celebrated film franchise’s first instalment in a decade.
The biggest box office opening in USA history was set this summer with the release of “Jurassic World”, which raked in $208.8 million.
Star Wars The Force Awakens box office collections: “Force Awakens” began rolling out in global markets on Wednesday. Some of the original cast, including Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), are reprising their rolls.
The film now holds a near flawless 95% score on review site, RottenTomatoes.com, and has many fans calling it the best film in the series since 1983’s “Return of the Jedi“.
Such a positive reaction for “The Force Awakens” may attract the kind of repeat viewings that made James Cameron’s “Avatar” and “Titanic” the highest grossing films of all time. The sci-fier is unspooling across 4,134 North American locations.
Despite many sold-out shows, there are still plenty of seats available for “Star Wars”, as many theaters throughout the country are staying open 24 hours a day in order to screen the movie around the clock. “I don’t really remember a time without Star Wars in my life”.
“Clearly, this is not the most important event that’s taking place in the White House today”, Obama deadpanned, after taking the lectern in the crowded briefing room.

Entertainment site Reddit has started to ban users who deliberately leak the plot of the film, as reports surfaced of a 20-year-old man beaten up by costumed Star Wars fans after he yelled out a major spoiler outside a theatre in the US.
