Star Wars: The Force Awakens Hits $250M in Global Ticket Sales
The updated estimate from Disney places the seventh Star Wars movie about $6 million ahead of current record holder, Universal’s “Jurassic World”, which opened at $208.4 million earlier this year on the June 12-14 weekend.

“The Force Awakens” brought in a stunning $120.5 million on Friday, eclipsing the previous record held by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” by nearly $30 million.
Prior to Friday’s release, over $100 million in advance tickets were already sold, prompting Cineplex in Canada to increase opening weekend screenings by 50 per cent – an additional 160 screenings at 115 theatres across the country. From there, it’s still a long way to hit the worldwide lifetime total box office record of $2.78 billion – also held by Avatar – but based on its stellar performance, if anything can do it, it’s likely to be Star Wars.
New studio estimates and Rentrak further estimate that the J.J. Abrams-directed Force Awakens will destroy the weekend box office record with at least a $225 million weekend total.
One day down, one record broken.
That includes a chart-topping $57 million from fans who flocked to see the first showings on Thursday night.
Globally, The Force Awakens has taken an estimated $US517 million ($A720 million), according to boxofficemojo.
The movie’s massive debut also defies the industry’s conventional wisdom that a winter film could never compete with the opening-weekend box office of a summer smash.
“The Force Awakens” starring John Boyega (l.) as Finn and Daisy Ridley (r.) as Rey took in a record breaking $238 million in US and Canadian ticket sales this weekend.
He said “Star Wars” profits won’t offset larger troubles Disney faces from shrinking subscribers at the ESPN sports network.

The original release that launched this entire franchise, 1977’s “Star Wars”, is still the second biggest film ever ($1.49 billion) when adjusted for inflation – trailing only the 1939 classic “Gone With the Wind” ($1.68 billion).
