Star Wars: The Force Awakens Is Fandango’s Top-Selling Movie Ever
“We are obviously very encouraged by the record-breaking pre-sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, Dave Hollis, the executive vice president of distribution at Disney, said in a statement. Playing in 4,134 theaters, “The Force Awakens” is the widest December release ever attempted.

Episode 7 in the Star Wars franchise opened on Thursday night. 47% of the $57 million came from 3D screenings.
The £9.64m tally beat the previous best of £9.48m, set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011. While IMAX generated $5.7 million of the take from 391 screens. Disney bought “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012.
Of that $57-million, almost half came from 3-D screenings, and roughly 10-percent came from IMAX screenings. Chris Geer poses for a photo in front of the Star Wars movie poster with his son Ethan during opening night of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at Century Theatre in Boulder, Colo., Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015. The biggest single day record still belongs to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Although spoilers for “Force Awakens” have been kept under lock and key, excluding the New York Daily News blunder, it’s safe to say that the the film will include some similarly jaw-dropping moments, or at least we can hope.
Disney expects Friday’s U.S. and Canada ticket sales to top $100m (£67m), and thinks another $100m will be taken this weekend. Four years ago, it managed to pull in $91 million during its first Friday in release. The record for the biggest opening weekend ever is now held by Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World.
Strong reviews for the film, which is set 30 years after “Return of the Jedi”, have added to the fervor for “The Force Awakens”. Rey, a resilient scavenger brought to life by Daisy Ridley, is one of the main protagonists in “Force Awakens” and a crucial part of Abrams’ effort to diversify the series. The Force Awakens was the exception, though, as some theater chains played the movie 24 hours around the clock last night, and plan on doing so again tonight.
