Star Wars: The Force Awakens is UK’s biggest film of all time

Thanks to strong word-of-mouth and a dozen Oscar nominations (including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor), the Leonardo-DiCaprio-against-the-elements drama earned $29.5 million stateside and $31.5 million overseas, which is much-needed considering the film’s $135 million price tag. Nearly universally panned, the animated tale of a polar bear trying to save his home debuted at a paltry estimated $6.7 million; not good numbers for any animated film, even one released outside of a major studio. This lead to more fans making up theories as to how Star Wars 8 and Star Wars 9 will proceed such as Luke telling Rey that she is his daughter or Luke telling her that she’s an incarnation of his father, Darth Vader.

One of the biggest questions fans were left with at the end of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is who are Rey’s parents?

After leading the weekend box office for each of the past four frames, Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” fell to third place this weekend with an estimated three-day take of 25.1 million dollars, 41 percent down from last weekend.

The seventh installment to the legendary franchise is the highest-grossing movie in North American movie history after elevating its overall domestic total to $851 million.

Two other new releases, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi and Norm Of The North, placed fourth and sixth. That’s enough for it to reach #3 in worldwide all-time grosses; it now sits $317.3 million behind Titanic’s worldwide haul.

Remarkably, while “Avatar”‘s domestic gross was the product of a 310-day run, including a theatrical re-release, “The Force Awakens”achieved its milestone at a light speed pace of only 20 days”. The awards favorite has earned just under $9 million in Germany so far. “‘The Revenant” needs to do roughly $400 million worth of business globally if it wants to make a profit and earn back its production and promotion costs. That’s below the $10 million that most analysts predicted that the critically-reviled film (a awful 0% on RT) would likely fetch. “Creed”, $14.2 million. 5.

In total, there were around 1.8 million admissions over the weekend in Germany, accounting for a $17.4 million (€16 million) gross. The Hateful Eight followed right behind with $3.4 million.
