“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took in an estimated $57 million in Thursday evening ticket sales in North America, Disney Co., breaking a four-year-old record.

By comparison, the weekend’s Number Two film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, drew $14 million in its opening week.
As noted, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is also smashing overseas box office records as The Force Awakens began to rollout in 12 markets on December 16th, with the date marking the biggest box office single day of all time in UK/Ireland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. Greenfield said the success of “Force Awakens” would not offset the impact of subscriber losses at ESPN.
After the movie, fans enjoyed a private after-hours party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios which included encounters with Star Wars characters and access to new Star Wars experiences, including Star Wars Launch Bay, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue and more. The previous record holder for a December opening was “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which took in $85 million in 2012. The previous record for such previews was the $43.5 million set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” in 2011, according to data from Rentrak Corp.
Episode VII also generated another $279 million internationally, pushing its overall haul to $517 million. It doesn’t hurt that some theaters are playing Force Awakens 24/7.
The Force is strong with critics and audiences, whose enthusiastic reactions have powered a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score and an excellent A CinemaScore, with an A+ among women and younger audiences, for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie racked up more than $100 million in pre-sales by its Thursday night opening.
And while many analysts expected the film to collect $1.5 billion to $2 billion globally, “The Force Awakens” is now predicted to gross $2.6 billion worldwide. The film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow.
