‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ on track for record-breaking weekend
Given the lack of direct competition in the weeks ahead – most films cleared out of the way of Star Wars once its release date was announced – The Force Awakens has a clear run at a $2bn box office take, it seems.

The projections have the latest “Star Wars” entry well on its way to blowing up “Jurassic World’s” $208.4 million opening weekend record with an estimated $250 million tally of its own. The film beat out the 2011 film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” in holding the record for Thursday night preview sales with $57 million. Exhibitors continually added screens to accommodate demand which resulted in a total of 2 million booked tickets ahead of the release – breaking another record for advanced ticket bookings.
That means “The Force Awakens” could also eclipse the global opening weekend record of $316.1 million by “Jurassic World” – along with the dino movie’s worldwide opening record of $524.9 million. The Force Awakens doesn’t debut in China, the second-largest moviegoing market, until January 9th.
That’s because the seventh film in the main Star Wars franchise is rewriting the record books – even if an ol’ Jedi scribe (Lawrence Kasdan) helped recharge the story.
Interest extended to global markets, where the movie brought in $72.7 million in 44 countries.
“For “Star Wars” fans and Hollywood, this weekend was like the Super Bowl, the World Series and the Kentucky Derby all rolled into one perfectly realized movie event”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak.
Disney paid just over $4 billion United States for Lucasfilm, the production company behind Star Wars, in 2012, an investment that now appears to be paying off. Sequels and spinoffs are in development for years to come. The record is held by “Avatar” with $2.8 billion.
The sci-fi adventure film starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Harrison Ford has been a intergalactic hit with both fans and critics.

Audiences awarded it an “A” rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore, Disney said.
