The latest Star Wars installment earned $57 million during the Thursday night previews, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, toppling 2011s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 from from the top spot, which drew $43.5 million. The current record for a launch weekend was set in June by Universal’s “Jurassic World” with $208.4 million, followed by 2012’s “The Avengers” at $207.4 million. It could eclipse the worldwide opening weekend record of $316.1 million, set again by “Jurassic World”. The light saber was passed from one generation to another with a mix of new and old, as “The Force Awakens” marks a new beginning for a franchise that began nearly four decades ago.
