The Force is growing stronger with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” moving toward a new opening weekend record of at least $225 million in the USA, estimates showed late Friday evening.

Walt Disney Co., which produced the film, is projecting that it will gross an estimated $220 million this weekend.

The latest Star Wars installment easily overtook “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which had held the opening-day record at $91 million. They wanted to see if The Force Awakens would beat box office expectations.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens returns to “a galaxy far, far away” 30 years after the action in the Return of the Jedi from 1983.

“There are literally millions of tickets available for this weekend, and exhibitors have a lot of flexibility in terms of capacity and increasing the number of shows based on demand”, Dave Hollis, Disney’s head of distribution, said in the statement. J made a decision to take a chance on Episode 7 and he can now say he helmed the film with the biggest opening day in United Kingdom box office history.

Over on the other side of the Atlantic, Star Wars has brought in $57m (£38m) upon its release in the USA and Canada.

Imax and 3-D screenings are helping to propel the record gross. The Force Awakens opening weekend has only just begun. The American Film Institute listed it among its top 10 films of the year.

A gaggle of Stormtroopers and the droid R2-D2 were spotted in the West Wing on Friday there was a screening of “Star Wars” for people who lost family in the Iraq war. Whether “The Force Awakens” can come close to the global hauls of those films ($2.8 billion for “Avatar” and $2.2 billion for “Titanic”) won’t be clear for weeks.

Star Wars frenzy has swept the celeb world with anyone and everyone getting involved.
