“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Shatters Box Office Records on Opening Weekend

US consumer spending and incomes up in November
The Commerce Department said on Wednesday income increased 0.3 percent last month after an unrevised 0.4 percent rise in October. The percentage of disposable income saved ticked down to 5.5% in November, though still a relatively high number.

Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm is likely looking like a good deal in light of the film’s performance. This broke the record for best worldwide opening, which was set earlier this year by “Jurassic World”.

The animated “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”, came in second place in its first weekend, with $14.3 million, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. The movie is already in striking distance of earning back that $550 million, and tracking toward a couple billion total gross when it’s all said and done, plus home media.

Meanwhile “Creed”, a next-generation version of the “Rocky” series earned $5 million in its fourth week on the big screen.
