Star Wars: The Force Awakens shatters North American box office records
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has shattered North American box office records by scoring the biggest opening of all time with a $238 million (£159 million) haul.

That number blasted the record for the biggest pre-opening in box office history held by “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which made $43.5 million on its opening night in 2011. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has also taken in $72.7 million from its first two days in 44 global markets.
Disney is projecting a domestic weekend total of around $220 million, which would surpass the record $208.8 million of “Jurassic World“.
“Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves”, reads a press release from Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios.
The Force Awakens is the seventh movie in the Star Wars franchise and the first in a new trilogy of space adventures, set around 30 years after the events of The Return Of The Jedi. Of the cast, Ford, Ridley and Adam Driver (as a young Darth Vader-like villain, Kylo Ren) stand-out in a hugely entertaining return to form for Star Wars.
The Death Star-sized Thursday night in the USA should also help to boost the film’s outlook for a record breaking opening weekend as well. The Disney marketing machine has been working non-stop for over a year to make sure everyone, even those who aren’t big Star Wars fans, felt the need to see it as soon as possible.

Worldwide, the movie is expected to take in just over $517m (£346m) in ticket sales, putting it in second place behind Jurassic World, which took $525m (£351m) this summer. Disney said that 47 percent of the Thursday box office came from 3-D showings and $5.7 million from Imax screens.
