“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” dominates the North American Box Office this past week. “Avatar” remains the all-time global champ at $2.788-billion (not adjusted for inflation).

The premiere of “Star Wars: Episode VII” has been aided by mostly positive reviews along with a long-standing popularity for a space action franchise whose last three movies were not deemed as stunningly successful projects.

Star Wars is certain to continue to dominate the German charts in January, where it faces little direct competition.

Figures for the largest United Kingdom box offices in history are compiled by the British Film Institute (BFI), but do not include movies dating from before 1975, as comparable figures are not available. “That comic book smash had paid preview showings before its much-anticipated June 23 nationwide launch…Both films [Dick Tracy] earned around $2 million which counted towards their domestic total but not toward their opening day or opening weekend totals unless of course they were”.

Even more formidable is the mere 11 per cent drop from the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy Sisters, which brought in $US12.6 million in its third weekend for a fourth-place spot. In just 17 days the film has earned $740.2 million and is expected to overtake Avatar’s total of $765 million by the middle of the week to become the highest grossing film in domestic history.

On 251 screens, the Paramount comedy made $3.5 million over the weekend to bring its total to $9.8 million.

The 31-year-old rapper bought all the tickets for an 11pm screening of the long-awaited movie at the Pacific Theatres within the Americana mall in Glendale, California on Saturday (02.01.16) night and issued an open invite on Twitter for his loyal supporters to go and enjoy the film with him.

The movie crossed the mark after it added an estimated $184.6 million globally, and also became the highest domestic third weekend ever with $88.3 million.

Point Break, $US6.8 million ($US6.8 million international).
