Star Wars: The Force Awakens Slashing Box Office Records

It goes without saying that the seventh episode in the “Star Wars” saga topped the weekend box office, but the question is was it enough to surpass “Jurassic World” as the biggest opening weekend of all time? It has already overtaken records set during the release of Harry Potter films and, if estimates are accurate, the latest episode in the Star Wars franchise could beat the $208.8m record set by Jurassic World earlier this year.
Audiences awarded an A rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore, Disney said. In North America, the film sold a record $100 million worth of presale tickets before Thursday previews began at approximately 7 p.m. EST.
“The potential for “The Force Awakens” to ultimately break into the $2 billion club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility”, said Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Rentrak.
3-D and Imax screenings are helping to propel the record gross.
Nomura Securities analyst Anthony DiClemente, who rates Disney a “buy”, said he was more confident after seeing the movie that it could become the top-grossing film of all time.
Disney said 47% of Thursday’s domestic ticket sales came from higher-priced 3D tickets. “Force Awakens” takes place 30 years after the conclusion of 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”. Whether “The Force Awakens” can come close to the global hauls of those films ($2.8 billion for “Avatar” and $2.2 billion for “Titanic”) won’t be clear for weeks.

At the White House, a beeping R2-D2 and two Stormtroopers surprised reporters with a quick appearance in the briefing room. “There’s a screening of “Star Wars” for people who lost a family member in the Iraq war”. And when you do, you’ll hear the familiar sounds of John Williams’ score, which incorporates snippets of the original Star Wars trilogy, along with new compositions.
