It goes without saying that the seventh episode in the “Star Wars” saga topped the weekend box office, but the question is was it enough to surpass “Jurassic World” as the biggest opening weekend of all time? By last Friday, worldwide ticket sales had reached US$129.5 million as the movie set opening-day records in Britain, Germany, Australia, Brazil and other countries.
Disney said that the strong showing for the latest “Star Wars”, which is playing at 4,134 North American theaters, “keeps us forecasting an opening weekend near $220 million”.
“The Force Awakens” opened this weekend in virtually every major market except Greece, India and China, where it will debut on January 9.
“The Force Awakens” now holds the box office records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time.
The new “Star Wars” film is the first installment in a decade of the series, which was created by George Lucas in 1977.
Disney has also said that The Force Awakens made $72.7 million in two days outside North America. A select number of theatres began screenings on Thursday night, the culmination of 17-hour-long Star Wars marathon events.
Ticket sales are estimated to have made $238m (£159.7m) – the previous record was held by Jurassic World, which took $208.8m in June.
The teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was released on YouTube on November 28, 2014. Judging from the positive fan reviews and the fact that movie has yet to open in many large, lucrative markets like China , the chances are pretty high!
