Starbucks brews up a new Android app with mobile payments and ordering

Today’s announcement marks the completion of the USA rollout, with the feature now available on iOS and Android at more than 7,400 Starbucks from coast to coast.

The Order & Pay mobile feature now makes up for 20% of their sales, and the company is looking to expand their services beyond the borders of the United States.

Mobile order-and-pay is still rare, but could become more common as fast-food chains look to keep up with changing expectations. Up until now, the app could only be used in-store to pay for a purchase.

Company officials won’t break down the number of customers that have been ordering ahead of time via the app in the early markets but says they have seen an increase in sales in stores with mobile ordering capability as a result of an increased number of customer visits. When you click “Order”, you’ll be able to browse and send that order to whichever store you select. The app will tell you the estimated pickup time.

Mobile customers skip having to pay at the counter and pick up their orders directly from the baristas.

Do you factor in an extra 15 minutes to wait in line at Starbucks on your way to work? If you have yet to download the Starbucks app for Android, then just pop on over to the Google Play Store to get your hands on it. It can vary on two different factors – what’s in your order, and how busy the store is.

Then, once you’ve chosen what you want and paid for it in the app – yes, you can still order that quadruple shot, almond milk, hazelnut syrup concoction -it gives you an estimate of how long your order will take to fix up. If we run out of something, the app will reflect that.
