Starbucks says Pumpkin Spice Latte will use actual pumpkin

Starbucks and Panera are each hyping reformulated versions of their pumpkin spice lattes in a fight to win over fans of the drink in coming weeks.

Last year, popular blogger Vani Hari criticized Starbucks on her website Food Babe after discovering that the popular drink contained none of the namesake fruit and a lot of artificial ingredients.

The pumpkin can be found in the form of puree, which is used to make a pumpkin spice-flavored sauce, according to the blog.

Panera Bread Co. says its version of the drink also has real pumpkin and will be sold in its stores starting September 9.

It was simple – espresso, perfectly steamed milk, warm fall spices with delicious flavor of pumpkin pie that reminds you of the cool, crisp days of autumn. Starbucks has not yet said when its drink will be available.

This week Starbucks couldn’t contain their glee in revealing that they have heeded the public’s demand for authentic pumpkin in their sugary coffee drink, announcing that the caramel coloring is no more.

A range of food companies including General Mills, Subway, Hershey and Nestle have said in recent months that they’re removing artificial ingredients from some or all products. The chain plans to offer samples Tuesday in Seattle, where Starbucks is headquartered.
