The Golden Globes have typically had a pretty loose definition of “comedy” when it comes to the movie nominations.

This morning, the Golden Globes rolled out this year’s nominees.

Ricky Gervais will return as host for the Globes when it airs on NBC on January 10.

“Today they are turning out to be one of the most exciting places on television”.

Netflix is leading the charge in Golden Globe nominations, with HBO and Stars following at a close second. So it’s not a clear harbinger for what is to come when the Oscars are announced, but does provide some direction.

Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed Boston Globe drama “Spotlight”, arguably the Oscar favorite, took three top nominations, including best director for McCarthy and best screenplay. “Carol”, which received five nominations, including for actresses Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, took a similar deceptively simple approach, its glossy surfaces becoming their own visual language to tell the story of a closeted lesbian love affair in 1950s NY.

Blanchett and Mara will be up against Brie Larson for “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn” and Alicia Vikander for movie “The Danish Girl” in the best actress race.

Snubbed by the HFPA were performances by older actors, including the brilliant star turns by Blythe Danner for “I’ll See You in My Dreams” and Charlotte Rampling for “45 Years”.

And like the actresses of “Carol”, Steve Carell and Christian Bale will compete against one another in the best actor category.

Other veteran actresses and actors also did well with the Golden Globes on Thursday.

The nominations veered from the predictions of industry experts, who had bet on “Spotlight” and “The Revenant” getting the most nods. There are plenty of viewers who will be pleased by the three nominations for “Outlander”, Ron Moore’s ambitious adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling romance novels.

Viola Davis is nominated in the best performance by an actress in a television series? drama category for her work in “How to Get Away with Murder”. Gaga, who played Countess Elizabeth on the Ryan Murphy created series tweeted. But over in the Comedy Or Musical section of the film awards, we’ve got Joy and The Martian squeezed in alongside The Big Short, Spy and Trainwreck.

Also nominated were Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”), DiCaprio and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”).

Nominees for the best actress in a TV series- drama also include Caitriona Balfe (‘Outlander’), Eva Green (‘Penny Dreadful’) and Robin Wright (‘House of Cards’). The film, which she co-wrote, also earned a nomination for best comedy or musical. Everyone is glad to see him back in the game. According to tweets from Australian film critic Simon Miraudo, the Globes’ official Twitter account kept misidentifying presenter America Ferrera as Gina Rodriguez.
