The Dallas Stars beat the San Jose Sharks today in their afternoon match-up by a score of 5-3 in a game that saw a lot of special teams battles and a number of Stars leads vanish.

Stalock, in his second start of the season and his first in two weeks, was hoping to get the better of former teammate and good friend Antti Niemi. A shot from the point by John Klingberg was initially stopped by San Jose goalie Alex Stalock, but the rebound trickled into the net after it went off Roussel’s leg.

Sharks coach Peter DeBoer used a coach’s challenge on the goal, stating that the Stars were offside.

First Period-1, Dal, Sharp 4 (Demers, Seguin), 2:33.

Jason Demers, traded by the Sharks early last season for fellow defenseman Brenden Dillon, has two goals, five points and is averaging 21:05 of ice time.

“They [our third line-Roussel, Fiddler, Sceviour] gave us a heck of a night, they really did”. “I thought their line was doing a good job of getting it there”.

Dallas has won eight of the last nine games. San Jose is laboring on the power play, coming up empty on all 13 opportunities over the past six games. Stalock stopped 20 of 24 shots.

“Yeah, we went into the third and made one mistake and it ended up in”, DeBoer said. “They had three 5-on-5 goals tonight, we didn’t have any”.

Per Elias, the Stars equaled their best start to a season in franchise history through the first 11 games (also 9-2-0 in 2006-07 and 1996-97). Sharp won a battle for the puck in the neutral zone, passed to Seguin and skated to the net in time to wrist in a rebound. Colorado isn’t a bad team but do have a few gaping holes that need to be filled before they can be considered a Western Conference power house again and that may have to occur through the draft as they won’t want to part with any of their young, talented forwards.

Tyler Toffoli (2-0-2) score his eighth and ninth goals of the season to move into a tie with Dallas’ Jamie Benn for the League lead. Goalie Antti Niemi played five seasons for the Sharks (5-5-0) and was facing them for the first time since they let him walk as a free agent in the summer.

Dallas scored 2:33 into the game.

Maybe the most impressive thing about the Stars’ 9-2-0 start is that there’s plenty of room for improvement. 4, San Jose, Nieto 2 (Wingels), 9:56 (sh).

Dallas recaptured the lead five minutes before the second intermission when Fiddler scored his first goal of the season off a wraparound. Fiddler skated behind the San Jose goal and then beat Stalock top shelf and to his short side to make it 3-2. They found a way to overcome adversity and make it a (3-1-0) home stand adding a late power play goal of their own.

The Sharks were on the power play after Stars rookie center Radek Faksa was called for hooking at 17:20.
