The German individuals had returned from Haiti to Germany in late December a year ago. Brazil’s health minister Marcelo Castro says the country is sending some 220,000 troops to battle the mosquito blamed for spreading a virus suspected of causing birth defects, but he also says the war is already being lost.

While Ebola is a deadly disease, Earnest said the Zika virus poses a different set of risks that are most serious for pregnant women.

The WHO has said that Canada and Chile are the only two countries in the Americas where the virus is not likely to spread.

Remember, spring break is just around the corner and if you are planning a trip any of the locations where the Zika virus is prevalent.

Avianca, Latin America’s second-biggest airline, and Brazilian carrier Gol made similar comments on Tuesday. Right now, there are no commercially available tests, Zika virus testing is performed at the CC Arbovirus Diagnostic Lab and state health departments.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have warned pregnant women to take precautions against mosquito bites when traveling to areas in Latin America and the Caribbean where there have been Zika outbreaks.

Health officials in several of those countries have told female citizens to avoid becoming pregnant, in some cases for up to two years. “She says. People look at him when we’re in the street”, Santos said.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced Wednesday that a traveler returning from Central America brought the Zika virus to Minnesota.

Compounding fears is the fact that the Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that carries the virus, has been detected in 12 of California’s 58 counties, including in the San Gabriel Valley in East Los Angeles.

Zika has been linked to mental defects at birth in thousands of children in Brazil. Neither was pregnant and neither required hospital care.
