State critical of Boston’s deal with Red Sox

The last time the Mets played in the World Series was 1986 against the Boston Red Sox.

In order to pull off this sweetheart deal, the Menino-era BRA first had to declare the Yawkey Way easement was intended “to protect against or eliminate ‘urban blight.'” That, of course, was the “flaw” Cunha found in the way the deal went down. NewsCenter 5’s Janet Wu asked.

Sidenote: I know a lot of people give Joe Buck slack because of his monotone voice and way he calls games, but I have to tip my hat to him on both walk off calls.

Cunha also said the agency did not formally seek any public review of approval of the deal.

The Red Sox said in a statement that “the transactions were for fair value, and the product of complex and tough negotiations over a protracted period”.

For as much emphasis that David Ortiz gets for helping beat the Yankees, the doctor that repaired Curt Schilling’s ankle so he could pitch in Game 6 deserves a credit as well. After that, they don’t have to pay the city anything.

Walsh spokeswoman Laura Oggeri said the episode reflects the reasons why the Mayor has moved to reform the BRA since taking office in early 2014.

“I would not let the BRA do anything like that”, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said. “The city will closely review the Inspector General’s report, however it is clear that the BRA acted inappropriately and ignored their responsibility to taxpayers”.

A spokesman for the BRA, which is under new leadership since Walsh took office, had no immediate comment Monday. Think about it without Dr. William Morgan, who performed the procedure hours before Game 6, then who knows what happens in Game 6 or if the Red Sox are even able to complete the comeback. The organization said it paid more for air rights and limited street use than other private parties had in the past.
