As for the recently discovered Zika-related disorder in a baby, the World Health Organization said, “Canada is the latest country to report a case of congenital malformation associated with a travel-related case of Zika virus infection”.

The Caribbean island and US territory has reported 10,690 laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika, including 1,035 pregnant women. “It is no surprise for this to also happen to someone from Wyoming”. Once a travel-related case is identified, public health officials and local mosquito control agencies are notified to take action to minimize the potential for local spread. Partners of pregnant women are advised to use a condom to guard against sexual transmission during pregnancy.

Michelle Davis, the health commissioner, said in the statement that “it has been 33 weeks since the first Zika case was confirmed in the USVI”.

“If we find there’s a need to change current recommendations, we’ll do it as soon as we can”, Brooks told The Huffington Post.

Some 4,000 students attend six schools in the Wynwood arts district where health officials say 22 people have contracted Zika, a mosquito-borne virus.

Four square blocks in the Wynwood neighborhood in Miami have been cleared and therefore the size of the area where Zika transmission is believed to be ongoing has been reduced, officials from the governor’s office and the Florida Department of Health said earlier today.

See the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) web page on preventing bug bites for more info. Wyoming is thought to be an inhospitable environment for the bugs.

In April, the CDC confirmed Zika causes microcephaly, a severe birth abnormality marked by underdeveloped heads and neurological problems, and new research suggests the infection is linked with a joint disorder and temporary paralysis.

While most people who contract Zika suffer no symptoms, the virus is considered to be particularly risky for pregnant women because it can cause birth defects including microcephaly – a condition in which infants are born with small heads.

The principle specifies that female travelers should avoid getting pregnancy for at least two months after their return, regardless of whether they have Zika symptoms.

He was not hospitalized and has since recovered from the illness.

There are now 1,962 cases of Zika virus confirmed in the continental US, as well as another 6,587 in American territories, according to the CDC’s most recent update published Wednesday.

The Health Department is also investigating a new nontravel case in Palm Beach County. The case did not count for the state because travel-related infections are charted by residency of the patient.
