Approximately 800,000 of Oakland County’s 1.2 million residents, and a similar number in neighboring Macomb County, receive their drinking water from the Great Lakes Water Authority.
Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell pauses as she testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015.
Burwell met with residents, local officials and Gov. Rick Snyder, who is asking the government to expand Medicaid coverage in Flint to people under 21 and pregnant women. As a result lead, a neurotoxin, and other contaminants seeped into the water through the pipes.
Weaver’s administration intends to begin replacing lead pipes in Flint starting next week.
“The Flint City Council originally voted to move away from Detroit Water and Sewerage Department in large part because water rates for residents were unaffordable”.
“Yeah. Well, what I would say is we’re still learning where all the pipes are and what are the biggest challenges”. The new funding would pay for pipe replacement in several hundred homes. The lack of action taken in Flint is directly correlated with its socioeconomic and demographic makeup. Lead levels still are high in the water of many Flint homes.
The two-page report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service says states have first-line enforcement responsibilities for drinking water regulations. Tests later showed high lead levels in some Flint children.
The lawmakers unanimously OK’d the measure Thursday.
Many residents of Flint – where 40 percent of the residents live in poverty and the average household income is $25,000 – are relying on donated bottled water, city officials said. Mary Lawston, a retired widow, said that she still struggles to pay between $172 and $214 a month for water she and her grandchildren can’t use.
The governor says he’s cleaned house at the state Department of Environmental Quality and is ready to do more.
By then, Flint children were turning up with dangerously high levels of lead in the blood, a condition that can cause brain damage. There is even a button of the touchscreen for consumers to donate an entire case of water to the cause.
Dykehouse unveiled the painting online this week.
“I want people to focus on solutions and I appreciate their comments”, said Snyder.
On Wednesday, Michigan, Governor Rick Snyder said, engineers have been given one month to find the underground lead water pipes of Flint.

“In light of the recent controversy regarding Flint water, (we) would like to emphasize that for decades, Detroit’s water has not only met, but exceeded EPA standards for lead control”, the statement read. Last Tuesday, the city issued a boil water advisory over fears of bacterial contamination due to a water main break.
