State of emergency could be extended if necessary – Erdogan
Germany is urging Turkey to respect the rule of law after Ankara imposed a state of emergency following an attempted coup.

The three-month state of emergency will see Erdogan preside the council of ministers and allows government to rule by decree, pass bills that have the force of law unless they are overturned by parliament, where the majority of MPs belong to the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP).
Turkey is asking its nationals living overseas to report people and organizations that support a US -based Muslim cleric who is accused of masterminding a failed military coup to Turkish authorities, Swedish Radio reported on Friday.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the state of emergency will counter threats to Turkish democracy.
“The president said we can not close our ears to the demands of the people”.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday accused followers of US -based cleric Fethullah Gulen of mocking the Turkish people.
Erdogan suggested that “an initial state of emergency for three months, then prolonged it for another three months”.
Erdogan has basked in the support of jubilant crowds who took to the streets of Istanbul Thursday night, packing one of the bridges spanning the Bosphorus and closing it to traffic.
In Washington, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Turkey’s allies will be “closely watching” Erdogan’s next moves.
Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2004 under reforms aimed at obtaining European Union membership.
Erdogan has demanded the United States extradite his former ally turned arch-enemy Gulen, the leader of the Hizmet (Service) movement, which runs a global network of schools as well as businesses, media outlets and cultural centres. But Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, has denied any knowledge of the attempted coup.
Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the special measures may only last up to 45 days, insisting that “we want to end the state of emergency as soon as possible”.

He has accused the government of arresting and persecuting his supporters in Turkey since 2014, after his followers in the judiciary and police helped lead a corruption probe into senior politicians and business people close to Erdogan.
