State of Emergency in Missouri; 8 Dead in Floods
The Governor’s office says that the Missouri State Highway Patrol has done dozens of water rescues, and assisted in the evacuation of residents from flooded areas. More than 280 state roads were closed, though Interstate 70 in St. Charles County, closed since Sunday, reopened Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings Sunday for several sections of Missouri, where three to six inches of rain fell during the weekend, and up to four inches more of rain was expected through Monday.
The flooding has heavily impacted much of the eastern and southern parts of the state and has claimed at least eight lives.
He also cautions Missourians in northern Missouri to be aware of freezing precipitation as the weather becomes colder.
Nixon told Missourians and other travelers to avoid driving into water, noting that “you’re taking great risks” by doing so.
After storms that in some areas dumped 12 inches of rain since Saturday, Nixon said the death toll “brings a level of sadness to the duty you have to do”. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including sport utility vehicles and pick-ups. Flooding can scour away the entire road surface and a significant amount of ground beneath.
Missourians who need disaster information, shelter information, and referrals are urged to call 211.
Authorities say more than 180 Missouri roads are closed because of flooding.
