The Department of Health in Rhode Island has reported the state’s first case of the Zika virus.

There have also been reports outside of Canada of both sexual transmission and transmission of the Zika virus through the blood supply.
Five of the seven confirmed cases are women, two of whom are pregnant, he said.
The primary mosquito that transmits Zika virus is found in the tropics and southern US, but it is not known to be established in Ohio.

The case involved a man who traveled to Venezuela and infected his male partner – who had not traveled – upon his return to Texas in January. Pregnant women should continue to avoid travel to areas where zika is actively spreading. A group of Democratic senators also scheduled a press briefing on Wednesday to call for the Zika virus funding.
There have been no reported cases in mainland Chile of mosquitoes infecting people with the Zika virus.
The discovery could help researchers develop a vaccine for the virus which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers and using mosquito nets at night is also recommended.
