State Police decline attorney’s request to investigate Will Smith shooting

Smith’s former Saints teammates were pallbearers at the service, according to The Associated Press.

Funeral services were held Saturday for former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith, who was fatally shot last week, NBC News reported.

Among other things, he has criticized the NOPD for initially saying only one gun – the one used to kill Smith – was confiscated at the shooting scene. A private funeral was held Saturday at a downtown theater.

State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson said the incident involving Hayes, 30, took place within the city limits, thus the NOPD “exercises original jurisdiction” over the investigation. His lawyer, John Fuller, has said, however, that he had a “strong suspicion” Will may have been “under the influence of some kind of mind-altering substance” that night.

Thomson alleged that Hayes showed “no remorse” while firing on the couple.

“It would be safe to say that not only did my client feel threatened but citizens that were out there on that block felt threatened as well”, Fuller said.
