State police, dive teams search after report of possible sunken vessel in

A search will resume Wednesday morning after reports of a boat sinking in Sandy Hook Channel Tuesday afternoon. A Coast Guard spokesman told the station the vessel is believed to be a fishing trawler.

Search crews from the New Jersey State Police reported finding debris in the water, but no definitive signs of the crew or the boat.

The vessel was submerged when the Coast Guard, aided by the NYPD, FDNY and New Jersey State Police, arrived, the spokeswoman said.

The NYPD is conducting a side-scan sonar search to help locate the sunken vessel, according to the Coast Guard statement. It’s not clear if anyone was on board the boat when it when down. The captain of the Dorothy B said he witnessed a 40-foot commercial fishing boat go down into the water.

Helicopters were also in the area searching the water along with marine units, according to media reports. Divers (R) were brought to search the wreckage once the boat was found. The “El Jefe” is normally docked in Belford.
