NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Former New Orleans Saints’ defensive end Will Smith is scheduled to be laid to rest Saturday, a week after he was shot and killed during a shocking traffic altercation.

Racquel, in dark sunglasses, riding in a black wheelchair, appeared in public for the first time following the fatal shooting last weekend. The lawyer for a man accused of fatally shooting former New Orleans Saints football star Will Smith is demanding the New Orleans Police Department recuse itself from the investigation.

The lawyers were granted motions to preserve the possible evidence by Orleans Parish Magistrate Court on Friday, the same day a public memorial was held for Smith. It’s unclear how much of the incident Thomas and Ceravolo witnessed.

“For something like this to happen it’s only right that we pay our respects”, he said.

Louisiana State Police have responded to Anthony Fuller, the attorney of Cardell Hayes arrested for the murder of Will Smith in New Orleans.

State police Col. Mike Edmonson wrote to Fuller on Saturday, saying he’s confident police can make an objective and professional investigation. “Now, tell me if that’s the behavior that’s consistent with someone who’s an animal out here looking for blood”, Fuller said. He added that police “will continue to follow the facts wherever they take us”.
