State unemployment rate drops to 5.1 percent

The governor’s office said Friday the state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate for October was 5.9 percent.

North Dakota’s unemployment rate of 2.8 per cent was the lowest in the nation, followed by Nebraska’s 2.9 per cent. That figure represents the combined unemployment rates of Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Clay and Baker counties. “Next year, employees, especially those with high skills and who are bringing high value to their firms, can look forward to larger raises”.

Wilcox County had Alabama’s highest unemployment rate at 13.3 percent.

The biggest job losses came in local government as well as professional and business service with both sectors reporting 1,100 fewer jobs than in September.

Choctaw County is the only county to register an increase in its unemployment rate over the year, rising from 7.8% to 8.4%. The Lincoln rate rose a tenth of a point, to 2.3 percent.

“The expanding job market is good news for people looking for seasonal holiday employment”, Anderson said.

“Once again we are seeing remarkable labor market performance in IN, with numbers ranking in the top 10 across our major sectors”, Ball State University economist Michael Hicks said. The unemployment indicator has now fallen beneath a 300,000-claim threshold for 37 consecutive months.

The national report showed payrolls across the US climbed by 271,000 in October, the strongest increase this year, following a gain of 137,000 the month before.
