Steady, calm Watson leads No. 1 Clemson
McCaffrey will go down as one of the greatest players ever in college football regardless of how the Heisman vote shakes out.

Fournette – the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy through October – shared his assessment of Henry and Watson as well as what he has heard about McCaffrey Wednesday night in Atlanta prior to Thursday’s College Football Awards show. But he thought “stereotypes” against white running backs (similar to stereotypes about white WRs or basketball players) hurt his chances. Defenses have constantly been shredded as Henry has rushed for 1,986 yards and 23 touchdowns. Returned 36 kickoffs for 1042 yards (28.9 average) and 1 touchdown….
Henry will be joined by quarterback Deshaun Watson (Clemson) and running back Christian McCaffrey (Stanford) in New York City on Saturday as finalists.
But he’s the biggest underdog in the field, despite powering Clemson’s first undefeated season in more than 30 years and its first true shot at a national title in the same span. Watson led the ACC in total offense (4,399 yards), touchdowns (30 passing, 11 rushing), and passer efficiency (159.6), all while toppling such traditional college powers like Notre Dame and Florida State. That’s pretty much it. He has an outstanding [offensive] line and coaching. As the leader of the nation’s No. 1 squad, both in the polls and by the CFP committee’s standards, Watson would probably win the award in any other year and he’d be the first Tiger to do so. His 69.5 percent completion percentage ranks third-best nationally. In that game, against a very good Tar Heels defense, he passed for nearly 300 yards with 3 TDs and added 131 rushing yards and two more scores.
Christian McCaffrey is the new NCAA single-season all-purpose yards record holder.
McCaffrey has 3,496 with one game left to play after rushing for 207 yards, catching four passes for 105 yards and gaining additional yardage on returns during Stanford’s 41-22 win over USC in the Pac 12 championship game last weekend.
Oh, and did I mention he returns kicks?
