Baddeley jumped from 48th into tie for 12th to sit on six under for the tournament after three rounds, leaving him five shots behind American leader Ricky Barnes.

But the Irishman atoned with a superb wedge to four feet at the next which he converted for birdie, and after a delightful two at the 16th he nearly chipped in for an eagle at 17 before a lapse in concentration cost him another bogey at the last.

Donald dropped a shot on the fifth but immediately got it back on the sixth, the first of five birdies in his round of 68 as he moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard to keep himself in the frame.

Barnes, 35, on Saturday closed with a bogey on the TPC San Antonio Oaks course, where he pulled his tee shot left. His exemption for the Valero Texas Open went to former University of Houston player Curtis Reed. Bart Bryant shot a 60 in 2004, and Zach Johnson equaled that in 2009.

Defending champion Jimmy Walker is set to miss the cut after backing up his 75 with a five-over 77.

Horschel hasn’t won since the 2014 Tour Championship, and Harrington has one PGA Tour win – a year ago in the Honda Classic – since he claimed his third major at the 2008 PGA Championship.

Notes: Dallas native Jordan Spieth is missing his first Texas event since he turned pro at the end of 2012. Although half the field didn’t finish play – the second round will resume at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday – 31 of those who did sign scorecards were under par, with another 11 at level par.

Hoffman had seven birdies and a bogey.

“One of the toughest flags on the golf course. Not a lot of green where that pin is, obviously, and no matter what you do ending your round with a birdie is always great”, said Hoffman, who needed only 26 putts in the round.

DALY CITY, Calif. – Haru Nomura shot a 1-under 71 in cool and breezy conditions Saturday at Lake Merced to maintain a three-stroke lead in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic. “Also San Francisco is really cold in the morning, but this morning it was just flawless temperature”. Then he was in the tournament and made birdies on his first two holes.

Overnight leader Ichihara, chasing a maiden career victory in Chiba, southeast of Tokyo, finished in regulation to lie one adrift with Australia’s Marcus Fraser – the current Order of Merit leader – a further shot back after a 67.
