Steelers acquire CB Gilbert from Browns, trim roster to 53

After all, there’s a reason why the Browns didn’t mind sending a former first-rounder to a division rival, besides their fondness for extra draft picks. They are joined by a number of other players who have been cut including Johnny Manziel, Pierre Desir, Taylor Gabriel, K’Waun Williams, et al. The Browns were hoping to form a deadly cornerback duo with Pro Bowler Joe Haden on the other side. “Obviously getting Josh Gordon back on our football team is huge”, Jackson said. They still have time.

The rest will be like any other draft class – hit and miss -, and their presence on the roster speaks more to how lightly-regarded numerous incumbents inherited by Jackson were. He suffered several injuries throughout his stint with the Browns, but what might have been more troubling were reports his passion for the game, or lack thereof, is what ultimately kept him off the field.

The move completes a day filled with other trades which trimmed National Football League rosters to the required 53 players.

Gilbert did return 12 kicks for an average of 28.3 yards last season, though, and the Steelers do not have an established kick returner.

But adding quantity only helps if you also add quality. Those four all have speed to continue the team’s search to be able to run around and passed people.

The Browns lost all of their preseason games. Ogbah, Nassib, Schobert, Holmes and Lemonier are expected to play and put that speed to use.

A couple weeks earlier, however, they also gave up on 2013 sixth-overall draft pick, outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo, whom they traded to the Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick. In the 2015 campaign he played just 50. That changes with this regime. Gilbert visited with the club, and some said he might have been their target with the 15th overall pick had he fallen that far. However, the Browns made a decision to keep the four rookies they drafted this year – Corey Coleman, Ricardo Louis, Jordan Payton and Rashard Higgins – along with veterans Andrew Hawkins and Terrelle Pryor over Gabriel.
