Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey may need more surgery

Pouncey, a two-time First-Team All-Pro selection, sustained a broken fibula in a preseason game against Green Bay, when Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix fell into his leg. He was placed on injured reserve but was designated for return, meaning if he was ready he’d be eligible to come back for the Steelers in November during Week 9 of the regular season.

According to NFL Media’s Rand Getlin, it’s feared Pouncey will miss more of the season than initially anticipated.

An NFL Network report early Thursday afternoon said Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey “is experiencing complications” from ankle surgery he underwent in August and would need a second surgery.

The surgery was necessary, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, because of an infection caused by a metal plate inserted during the first surgery. Short-term IR players have to practice three weeks ahead of their return, per National Football League rules. The Steelers have a tough test this weekend, as it is a Super Bowl rematch against the 4-1 Arizona Cardinals.
