The Steelers announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have claimed Mettenberger off waivers from the San Diego Chargers. Originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round (178th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft, Mettenberger has logged 10 starts in 14 games played in his career.

The Titans released Mettenberger this past May, and the LSU-product was quickly picked up by San Diego. Mettenberger also had a single rushing touchdown. In seven games in 2014, he threw for 1,412 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions – for a quarterback rating of 83.4.

While Ben Roethlisberger is entrenched as the Steelers’ top quarterback and Landry Jones as his backup, the team has had issues with its third-string position.

Mettenberger is still a complete unknown in terms of what his upside looks like, but the Steelers seem content with adding him and hoping that he can be a player who could step in behind Roethlisberger if needed.

Along with news on Mettenberger came the announcement that veteran quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, a Pittsburgh native, will miss his second-straight season after being put on Injured Reserve.
