The 49ers played with tight defense. The defense gave up 453 yards in 23 minutes.

Hayne, after spilling his first punt against the Minnesota Vikings last week, was cautious and reserved against the Steelers.

“They got after our tails”, he said.

“It’s no secret”, Tomsula said. I need to go back and see how the Cardinals did in pass rush this week. We’re not going to overreact when we win.

Fans and professional talkers alike will go mining for nuggets of optimism following a loss like Sunday’s, but there are few – if any – to be found. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was under duress for much of the afternoon.

Torrey Smith’s 75-yard touchdown reception, on the second play of a fourth-quarter drive, pulled the 49ers within 36-18.

Controlling the game, however, was another matter entirely.

The 49ers’ rushing game, the backbone of that Monday night win, was marred by fumbles and penalties less than a week later. An 18-play drive, however, saw the 49ers turn the ball over on downs when Bruce Miller was unable to keep control of the ball on a short Kaepernick rollout pass in the third quarter.

Roethlisberger’s comments mirror those of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who said the team encountered the problem for “the majority of the first half”. “We didn’t do that today”.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin (81) loses the ball as he is hit by Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Gay (22) in the first quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, September 20, 2015, in Pittsburgh. DeAngelo Williams ran for 127 yards last week and the pass combo of Ben Roethlisberger and wideout Antonio Brown is risky.

Bush exited the 49ers’ season-opening 20-3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings with a calf strain after being stopped for no gain on a third-and-1 running play.

For the game, Brown had nine catches for 195 yards and a touchdown. Roethlisberger averaged 13 yards per completion and wasn’t sacked as the Steelers ripped off yardage in super-sized chunks.

There is plenty to discuss about Carlos Hyde, NaVorro Bowman and and so forth, but I thought we could start with the coaching staff. The offseason from hell got started with the decision to replace Jim Harbaugh with Jim Tomsula. The Pittsburgh Steelers took a look at it, ripped it up and set it on fire. Hyde steals Vikings running back limelight in the Week 1 as he completed 168 yards on 26 carries, scoring two touchdowns. “For us, we’re going to stay on our routine”. “It’s another opportunity to put points on the board”.

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t saying if Jarryd Hayne will be their punt returner this weekend after his dropped catch, but his quarterback Colin Kaepernick is full of praise for the Australian. He was cleared by doctors to return but was held out as a precaution….
