Steelers QB Roethlisberger practices, explains protocol

Ben Roethlisberger torched Seattle for 456 passing yards with two interceptions before being taken to the locker room for concussion protocol.

Roethlisberger was officially diagnosed with a concussion on Tuesday after taking an imPACT test. He retook the test on Wednesday and was cleared to resume practicing as the Steelers (6-5) prepare to host Indianapolis (6-5) in a matchup of two teams fighting for playoff spots in the AFC. He went onto his weekly radio show Tuesday on 93.7 The Fan and said he didn’t have a concussion shortly after the test and everything seemed fine. Following the game, it was reported Roethlisberger was undergoing the NFL’s concussion protocol. “You have to think about the type of man, husband and father you want to be when you are done playing, because this is such a short part of our lives”. “No dizziness, no nausea, none of that stuff that comes with it. When I told the doctors, Dr. (Joseph) Maroon and the training staff said I didn’t have a concussion”.

But he does have a concussion and Steelers do not know yet whether he will be able to play Sunday night vs. Indianapolis.

“We felt like the opportunities were there today in the pass game and they were”, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said.

“Even if they feel better they are going to remain in the protocol”, Tomlin said. I thought we were battle tested, we continue to stay the course, we found a way.

Starting this year, those spotters have been given the ability to buzz the officials for medical timeouts if a player appeared to need medical help.

It’s a confusing situation, but it’s now clear where the confusion came from, as Roethlisberger’s guess that he didn’t have a concussion came before the results came back. Again, it feels like that ‘Who’s On First?’ routine and I’m just ready to shout, “I Don’t Give A Damn” – who actually played shortstop on that team, if I have it all correct. That why I think I was so confused yesterday when coach Tomlin said I had one.

“You can have, when you’re done playing, knee replacements and hip replacements and all kinds of surgeries”, Roethlisberger said. “You’re ready to practice.’ Until I hear otherwise I’m ready to practice”. “I could see straightforward no problem”.

Roethlisberger said on his show he anticipates practicing when the Steelers (6-5) return to work on Wednesday, but under guidelines set by the league it’s more likely he and Shazier will be limited early in the week. “It’s sad. I don’t want my teammates when you have reunions….” The quarterback-turned-wide receiver has agreed to sign with Cleveland, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

“If we can have each other’s backs, that’s huge”, he said.
