Steelers secondary giving up yards, but not big plays

Wentz is the first rookie, going back to at least 1970, to win his first two National Football League starts while not turning the ball over.

“Heady player, smart, understands the game, physically gifted, both with his legs and arm, can make all the throws”, Roethlisberger said of Wentz. “And his preparation is very good”.

The first of many secondary replacements drafted, Golson is expected to play slot corner, and produce the same ball-hawking skills which made him a second round draft pick in 2015.

“I think the thing that was most important that I try to relay to young quarterbacks is don’t try and do too much”, Roethlisberger said.

“I thought I was going to be facing him two times a year in Cleveland”, Roethlisberger said. But the Steelers are 19-2 against rookie quarterbacks since 2004 and will bring a variety of blitzes that the young signal-caller has never seen – at least not at regular-season National Football League speed.

Wentz was slated to be Philadelphia’s No. 3 quarterback until Sam Bradford was traded to Minnesota.

The other thing to watch is this: In its first two games, Philadelphia has run 77 and 72 plays. “That guy can make some really big plays and it’s pretty impressive”.

Roethlisberger started his first game in Week 2 of his rookie season after Tommy Maddox was injured in the opener.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – The New England Patriots could be looking for yet another quarterba… The Steelers’ personnel defensively is better than the Bears’ and Browns’, but this isn’t the high-quality Steelers defense you once knew. We’ve seen Cox’s ability to take over games in the past, though, such as the Eagles-Saints tilt from a year ago. Wentz is a rookie, and we’re still waiting for him to do more rookie-like things, but that unknown means he could also play surprisingly well.

On Roethlisberger’s fourth-down interception early in the game, the Bengals brought an 8-man blitz (!) which the Steelers picked up relatively well. Ron Brooks and rookie Jalen Mills take his spot. They converge on him and give up just one yard after the catch, stopping him three yards short of the first down. “He’s a great route runner”.

Linebacker Ryan Shazier record a team-high 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and seemed to be making plays all over the field. They handled the Browns and Bears well, scoring 29 points against each team. When your philosophy is to be aggressive and count on the pass rush getting there most of the time, how do you switch gears? They would come out in ace (two tight ends), which is a base package but spread it out. Le’Veon Bell returns in Week 4 after serving his three-game suspension. The Pitt defense is giving up just 16 points per game, but allowing 398 yards per contest.

He started last season as a backup but started the final 10 games after Kelvin Beachum suffered a knee injury. Roethlisberger was sacked just twice over the first two games. Coach Doug Pederson has done an excellent job of putting Wentz in positions to success, folding in misdirection passes, spreading the field and changing the launch point to keep defenses from honing in.

Butler also talked up his secondary, which has done a surprisingly good job so far this season.

That being said, it would be nice to see Senquez Golson come back healthy, and Sean Davis and Artie Burns continue to play and grow in their roles on their current defense.

It sounds nearly as if Wentz has been studying Roethlisberger, which should come as no surprise given the work ethic he’s displayed in the short time since being drafted by the Eagles. Wentz is only one to do so with no team turnovers.Wentz is 12-for-14 for 102 yards and one TD on two opening drives. Then he marched the Eagles’ offense down the field on the first drive of his career and tossed a lovely touchdown pass to Jordan Matthews.
