Steelers sign Doug Legursky; Center started Super Bowl XLV

Pouncey also missed Super Bowl XLV at the end of his rookie season with an ankle injury suffered in the AFC Championship.

Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey was carted off with a left ankle injury in Sunday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers at Heinz Field.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Tuesday morning that they’ve signed free agent offensive lineman Doug Legursky.

If the Wallace name is familiar, it is because he was once a member of the 49ers.

To make room for Legursky on the active roster, the team placed wide receiver David Nelson on the team’s Reserve/Injured List. He was a late signee with the Chargers last September after a season-ending injury to Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick. His versatility has been one of his greatest strengths. There he struggled in run blocking and was responsible for an uncharacteristic penalty in San Diego’s week 4 game against Jacksonville. Nelson, the former Kansas State star, is out because of what appears to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Cody Wallace helped fill Pouncey’s spot two seasons ago, and he’ll likely do so again now as one of the Steelers’ backup interior linemen.

Wallace definitely brings a lot of energy and aggression to the game, famously fined in 2013 for an in-the-scrum infraction involving Miami Dolphins DT Randy Starks’ groin area. He can play center and guard. At left guard, he struggled.

Foster believes continuity on the offensive line will help efforts to replace Pouncey. That, too, should somewhat mitigate the void felt by Pouncey’s unfortunate injury.
