The Steelers are furiously rewriting contracts to create salary cap space.

He will count more than $15 million against the salary cap this year, so the signing of Williams may be a safeguard if the Steelers decide not to re-sign Timmons.

The New England Patriots constantly move Tom Brady’s money around to help the team navigate the salary cap, and the Steelers have one of the best in the business with performing such a task with Omar Khan at the helm.

As reported by their official team website, the Steelers signed reserve inside linebacker Vince Williams on Tuesday to a new three-year contract through the 2018 season.

Below is a look at Mitchell’s restructured contract.

Antonio Brown has expressed a desire for a new contract, even though he has two years left on his current deal and the Steelers have a long-standing policy of not offering new deals until a player reaches the point of entering the final year of his contract. Absolutely not, but before you start complaining about them constantly kicking the proverbial can down the street, and never picking it up, realize this is pretty common practice for nearly every National Football League team. As of now, Brown is set to earn $6,250,000 in salary this year and $8,710,000 in 2017.

Because of Timmons’ contract, there was talk before the season that he could be a cap casualty.

Earlier in the week the Steelers restructured the contract of tackle Marcus Gilbert and that transaction resulted in a cap savings in 2016 of $2,392,500.
