The Barclays has returned to Bethpage for the first time since 2012, when Rose finished 46th on the feared Black course which also hosted the 2009 US Open. But he’s got nine top-10 finishes (behind only U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson with 12) including two runner-ups and is a near lock to make it to Atlanta.
The 2016 major season has come to a close, but Jordan Spieth still covets one more trophy – and it might not be the one you expect.
Though his three victories this year outnumber the two claimed by Johnson, the long-hitting American holds an edge when it comes to “elite” wins given that he has landed a major (the U.S. Open) and a WGC title (the Bridgestone Invitational).
The FedEx Cup Playoffs are good for golf fans because the best players in the world are in the same place once again in the calendar year, instead of dispersing after the fourth major, the PGA Championship.
Day and Scott are part of a five-strong Australian challenge and while any player in the 125-man field for this week’s Barclays tournament in NY can, mathematically, win the ultimate prize, it is the Queenslanders who are most likely.
“It was just a real bummer finish because I actually felt like I really actually played pretty solid today”, Spieth said. The race to make it inside the cutoff is sometimes more exciting than the one to win the tournament.
But this week serves as the final step for Ryder Cup hopefuls – in a way. That will be cut to 100 for next week’s Deutsche Bank, followed by 70 players for the BMW Championship. That was in 2008 when the points were not reset after the third event.
Jordan Spieth shot an even-par 71 in Round 1 of The Barclays.
Smylie Kaufman (26th): The former LSU golfer won in Las Vegas in October and played in the final group as a Masters rookie, tying for 29th.
Not to be overlooked is Jason Day, whose three victories include The Players Championship and the Match Play.
Defending champion: Jason Day. The tour has created bobbleheads of the eight players who have won it (Tiger Woods is the only player to win it twice).
“So I’ll try and keep the momentum going a bit like at the start of the year where I tried to putt better each day”.
