Stephen Colbert says ‘Late Show’ premiere nearly didn’t make it to broadcast

Colbert reportedly wanted Trump as a guest for his first night behind the Late Show desk, but Trump instead opted to appear on NBC’s The Tonight Show, hosted by Jimmy Fallon.

Anyway, because of the length of the show – we’re guessing? – when Colbert’s crew sent the show over to the network, “the computers kept crashing”, he said.

Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is booked to appear on Late Show Friday, September 18.

The anecdote gave Colbert an opportunity to show a genuine earnestness to the audience at a time when he’s still introducing himself to viewers after years of playing the role of bombastic conservative commentator on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report“.

The first episode of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show was a success for CBS, but as the host explained on Wednesday night’s show, it was almost a complete disaster.

Luckily, of course, all went down just fine.

“Tonight Show” fell to the No. 2 slot against Colbert’s debut with a 2.4 household rating and 0.8 in the key demo.

“The original episode – which initially went over two hours – was eventually trimmed down to a little over an hour”, Colbert said. This was evident when Colbert spent some time sitting at his desk, which he claimed was carved out of a larger desk, and riffed on Donald Trump’s various escapades on the campaign trail. “I will not do this show through the mouth of someone who is always afraid and angry and wants you to join him in those feelings – that’s all that will be different”. After CBS had plastered my face on almost every flat surface on the planet As I felt the oxygen begin to drain from my brain and all my organs shutting down I thought, ‘If we actually make it to air, thisll be a pretty good story.

It was an evidently vain hope on my part that Stephen Colbert would even attempt to blow up the format and create another appointment-viewing show.
