Stephen Fry leaves Twitter after ‘bag lady’ furore
The QI star is known for poking fun at Hollywood stars during the annual ceremony but a gag he made about winning costume designer Jenny Beavan was a step too far for some viewers.

After costume designer Jenny Beavan accepted an award for her work in Mad Max:Fury Road, Fry took to the stage and joked about her outfit choice.
However, Stephen took to Twitter just moments later to defend himself and he insisted that the comments were in jest and perfectly received by their recipient.
Fabulous magazine’s assistant editor, Beth Neil, also gave her two cents on the social media site, writing, “Stephen Fry’s “dressed as a bag lady” joke about the victor of costume design was horrid. I’ve heard people shriek their secularism in such a way as to make me want instantly to become an evangelical Christian”.
Stephen tweeted: “So just a word to the tragic figures who think calling Jenny Bevan a bag lady was an insult”. She’s a dear friend and she got it. Derrr, ‘ he tweeted later.
Having failed to gain any new users in the last three months, Twitter usage actually dropped at one point at the end of 2015, before picking up again at the start of the year.
Fashion writer Poppy Dinsey said: “What a totally twattish thing for Stephen Fry to say about Jenny Beavan”.
The reasons for Fry leaving Twitter are still unclear.
This is not the first time Fry has quit Twitter – only to eventually return.
And Matt Lucas said: ‘Didn’t you get the memo?
The Jewish comic and actor deleted his Twitter account on Monday after an expletive-filled rant on Sunday night to the “sanctimonious f******” who had complained on the social media site about his comment.

Stephen signed off his note by slamming the social media site as a “stalking ground for the sanctimoniously self-righteous”.
