Stephen Hawking: Greed, stupidity greatest threats to Earth

Famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking shared his thoughts on the problems currently plaguing humanity during his interview with Larry King on “Larry King Now”.

He said in 2010: “Mankind is in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity”. “Six years ago I was worrying about pollution and overcrowding”.

For a brilliant mind like Stephen Hawking, during the last interview, Larry King did not hesitate when he asked the living legend about what would still mystify him about the universe.

“At this rate, it will be 11 billion by 2100”.

“Air pollution has increased over the past five years”, he said. This means that more than 80 percent of people living in urban areas are breathing in risky levels of pollution in the air.

Some things are just too big of a mystery, keeping even geniuses like Stephen Hawking guessing. During the Starmus Science Conference in Tenerife, Spain, he expressed concern over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for military purposes and warfare, according to The Independent.

When asked about the dangers of artificial intelligence, Hawking explained that increases in technology may be coming at a steep cost, saying: “Governments seem to be engaged in an AI arms race, designing planes and weapons with intelligent technologies”.

Hawking and King also discussed artificial intelligence.

The Washington Post noted that in an interview with Larry King Now on June 26, the famous scientist said that he’s anxious of overcrowding.

Hawking has asserted that hotter ocean temperatures would melt the ice caps and cause large quantities of carbon dioxide to escape the ocean floor.

“Beneficially, AI could co-exist with humans and augment our capabilities, but rogue AI could be hard to stop”.

“Will we be too late to avoid risky levels of global warming?” the famed theoretical physicist asked. Hawking answered with questions: “Why do the universe and all the laws of nature exist?”. Are they necessary? In one sense they are, because otherwise we wouldn’t be here to ask the question. In response to that comment, Hawking said he had learned a lot about women in the past few years.
