Stephen Piscotty suffers head contusion in collision with Peter Bourjos
Six Cardinals pitches combined on a six-hit shutout – despite issuing 10 walks – as the Pirates, who like St. Louis have already clinched a postseason berth, stranded 16 baserunners. The team was 15 games above.500 in games he started in 2014, but just three above.500 with other catchers, and it didn’t win a game after he left Game 2 of the NLCS against the Giants due to an oblique strain.

Pittsburgh has been relentlessly chasing frontrunning St. Louis for five months. “Season ain’t over until it’s over”. He became the first Boston rookie southpaw to win 10 games since John Curtis in 1972 and finished his rookie season at 121 2/3 innings. Matt Carpenter (.267, 95 Rs, 27 HRs, 83 RBIs, 4 SBs) has been hitting the ball well for the Cardinals, going 2 for 5 yesterday with one run, one home run, and one RBI. I can’t say a remember a game much like this one tonight.
Reynolds followed with his 13th homer of the season, a drive into the right-field stands. Jonathan Broxton (4-5) earned the win on a night the Pirates crowded the basepaths but never crossed home plate.
Angels 5, Athletics 4: Pinch-hitter David Murphy drove a bases-loaded single into left field to end it, and Los Angeles kept the pressure on in the AL wild-card race with its sixth consecutive victory. Kevin Siegrist walked Francisco Cervelli, but Pedro Alvarez flied out.
“We did everything but win the game”, Clint Hurdle said. You can see video of the play here, but be warned that it is graphic.
A handful of Pirates players peeled their attention away from Sunday’s National Football League games in Wrigley Field’s cramped visitor’s clubhouse to watch the Cardinals’ ninth-inning collapse against Milwaukee.
This game will feature Lynn (RHP) on the mound against the Pirates, who have a 40-19 home and 77-46 overall record when they take on a right-handed starter. Andre Ethier hit a tying groundout in the top of the ninth, then the rivals needed three more innings to decide this one.
As for the Pirates, left-hander J.A. Happ got the start and turned in another good outing for the Buccos. The lefthander allowed only Kolten Wong’s single leading off the third. In 11 games started (60 innings pitched) against the Cardinals Happ is 2-8 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty was carted off the field following a violent collision with teammate Peter Bourjos.
Piscotty has a bruise on his head and all tests conducted were negative, the Cardinals said.
After the game, team officials said he would be hospitalized overnight, with the extent of his injuries not known until further exams Tuesday. He waved to the crowd as he left, signaling his injury might not as bad as it looked.
“We had opportunities but didn’t cash in at all today”, McCutchen said. “You hope that he’s OK and it’s nothing too serious”.

Then, they get Holliday and Adams back in September but Yadier Molina goes down with a thumb injury and Carlos Martinez has been shut down for the season with a shoulder strain.
